Spillover bias in multigenerational income regressions

نویسندگان

چکیده

A growing literature studies long-term income persistence across more than two generations. Despite a rich understanding of measurement-related biases for the parentchild model, far less is known multigenerational model that captures transmission from parents and grandparents. We show even using 25-year average can result in spurious grandparent coefficients. Importantly, given parental measure, averaging over years grandparents increases spillover bias. propose an IV approach effectively mitigate bias with shorter timespans income. With Norwegian administrative data, we reveal positive grandfather

The Stambaugh Bias in Panel Predictive Regressions

This paper analyzes predictive regressions in a panel data setting. The standard …xed e¤ects estimator su¤ers from a small sample bias, which is the analogue of the Stambaugh bias in time-series predictive regressions. Monte Carlo evidence shows that the bias and resulting size distortions can be severe. A new bias-corrected estimator is proposed, which is shown to work well in …nite samples an...

Bias-Correction Fuzzy C-Regressions Algorithm

In fuzzy clustering, the fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm is the most commonly used clustering method. However, the FCM algorithm is usually affected by initializations. Incorporating FCM into switching regressions, called the fuzzy c-regressions (FCR), has also the same drawback as FCM, where bad initializations may cause difficulties in obtaining appropriate clustering and regression results. In...

Small sample bias and selection bias effects in multivariate calibration, exemplified for OLS and PLS regressions

In multivariate calibration by for example ordinary least squares (OLS) multiple regression or by partial least squares regression (PLSR) the predictor ŷ(x) is perfect for the calibration sample itself, in the sense that the regression of observed y on predicted ŷ(x) is y = ŷ(x). Plots of y against ŷ(x) are much used to illustrate how good the calibration is and how well prediction works. Usual...

Net Income, Gross Income, and Bias in Child Support Awards in Gross Income-Shares States

In this study I discuss the pros and cons of using net income vs. gross income in gross income-shares states. It is argued that the “standardized net” approach is the best approach in determining child support awards based on the combined principles of equity and accuracy. However most states use gross income approaches for the sake of simplicity. Such gross income approaches can generate biase...

Optimal Income Taxation with Present Bias

Work often requires up-front costs in exchange for delayed benefits—one must search for a job before becoming employed, paychecks are typically delayed by a few weeks, and a promotion may come only after months or years of extra effort—and mounting evidence documents present bias over labor supply in the face of such delays. This paper studies the implications of such present bias for the optim...
